NYU Coming to Brooklyn with State of the Art Facility to Study Emerging Field of “Urban Informatics”

CUSP( Center for Urban Science and Progress) is New York University’s new ground breaking project aimed to provide public-private research center in the heart of New York City. The center will use New York City as its laboratory and classroom to develop programs that will help cities around the world become better palaces to live in.

New CUSP facility will be located at 370 Jay Street in Downtown Brooklyn and it will take over old MTA building which has been underutilized for several years. This 300,000 square feet building will be replaced by state of the art glass-and-steal structure and will include renovated subway station.


CUSP students, who will be made out of 400 Masters and 100 Phd.’s, will observe, collect, and analyze various digital data and conduct extensive research on them in efforts to develop new tools and expertise to deal with vastly growing city population. First class is expected to commence in fall of 2017.

Over the next 30 years, 1 billion people are expected to populate cities as a part of the trend of urbanization where people are likely to move to large cities as they offer more opportunities for better life. Increase in population will impose significant challenges on public infrastructure, transportation, housing, safety, health and energy and CUSP’s primary task will be anticipating and learning how to deal with forthcoming issues.

CUSP campus will have an enormous economic impact on Downtown Brooklyn as it is expected to  create job opportunities not only in the new field of science but also in surrounding area that will host entertainment and leisure shops as well as other retail. Many restaurant chains have already flocked the area, such as ShakeShack, PotBelly Sandwiches, Panera Bread, Chipotle, Five Guys and others.
